Suffolk and Norfolk Initial Teacher Training

High quality teacher training in local schools

About this programme

How is the programme structured?

This is a one year, full-time training programme starting at the beginning of September and finishing in the third week of July.

Centre-based training consists of 80 days and is organised at the beginning and end of each term.

School-based training (teaching practice) consists of 110 days and includes experience in two consecutive key stages in two different schools. There are 3 teaching placements over the year.

Where do I train?

There are two training locations, one in Ipswich and one in Lowestoft. Training is duplicated in both training centres. Where you train depends on your home address.

You will be allocated to placement schools within a maximum of 30 minutes drive from your home address.

Who will train me?

In school you will be trained by experienced and skilled classroom teachers (mentors) as well as senior staff and the Headteacher. In centre you will be trained by a variety of professionals including SCITT leaders, primary strategy advisers, early years advisers, ASTs (Advanced Skills Teachers), visiting speakers and Headteachers.

How will I be assessed?

In order to be awarded QTS and PGCE you will have to show by the end of the programme that you meet all the Professional Standards for QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) http://www.tda.gov.uk/partners/ittstandards.aspx?  together with the University criteria for PGCE.

Assessment is by formative and summative written assignments, observation of your teaching during your school placements and production of a portfolio of evidence matched to the Professional Standards for QTS. For one of the Professional Standards you must also pass online QTS skills tests in numeracy, literacy and ICT.
